La Convention relative aux droits des personnes handicapées a été adoptée le 13 décembre 2006 au Siège de l’Organisation des Nations Unies à New York et a été ouverte à la signature le 30 mars 2007. C’est le premier grand traité du XXIe siècle en matière de droits de l’homme et c’est la première convention des droits de l’homme à être ouverte à la signature des organisations d’intégration régionale.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) entered into force on May 3, 2008. This international law represents a significant step towards addressing the poverty, human rights and development challenges experienced by people with disabilities. For most countries, however, there are significant gaps between the standards set by the CRPD, the standards of national policies and the reality on the ground for people with disabilities.
